This is the moment that breaks a lot of content teams. They conclude the algorithm is random, or that Google is rewarding friends, or that there's some secret ranking factor that only giant sites get. None of those are true. What's actually happening is that there are five or six distinct signal layers feeding the ranking decision, and you're winning on two or three of them while the competitor is winning on the one or two that currently matter most for this query.

The ranking factors SEO guides talk about — content quality, backlinks, on-page, technical, Core Web Vitals — are what I call visible factors. 1. Check intent match
Look at the top 10 SERP results. Are they the same content shape as yours? If no, you have an intent mismatch. Fix that first — no other work pays off until you're in the right bucket.
2. Check your Navboost trajectory
